If we’re not feeling energized, it’s sometimes hard to know what’s silently sapping our energy levels and making us feel under-par, especially if we’ve ticked off all the usual advice of eating well and exercising regularly.
Interestingly though, there’s a common drain on our energy levels that many of us are unaware of — our posture. It’s all about how we hold ourselves when sitting, standing, and sleeping. Bad posture — when the spine curves into an excessive “S” or “C” shape — has been shown to cause all kinds of problems, from aches and pains to breathlessness, digestion issues, fatigue, and poor circulation.
On the other hand, having good posture has been found to make you feel stronger and fitter, in turn improving your mood and helping you feel ready to take on new challenges. And the best news is that taking action can help slow and, in some cases, totally counteract any bad posture symptoms having huge implications on our body and mind. So what can we do to make a difference?
- Simple posture exercises can help. Keep your shoulders back and aligned with your hips, and use the stomach muscles to keep your body straighter, slightly bending your knees to ease pressure on hips. It might feel strange at first, but with practice this will soon become an everyday habit.
- Think about how you sit, making sure your feet are flat on the floor, your bottom is at the back of the seat, your head is straight and your shoulders are back and relaxed.
- Chairs also have a huge bearing on how good your sitting posture is. Make sure your body is totally supported with correctly positioned armrests that encourage you to sit straight. Consider a chair that can offer support to your lower-lumbar spine like any of the ones on this list!
