“Life is short,” they say. Well, maybe not as short as they think! A new study suggests that participating in just ten minutes of leisurely exercise per week can ward off things like cardiovascular disease and cancer, and significantly extend a person’s lifespan.
The collaborative study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine compared data from the national death registry with the health and lifestyle habits of 88,140 adults ages 40 to 85 over a ten year period. The results showed that compared with those who were inactive, people who participated in as little as ten to 59 minutes of leisurely exercise per week saw an 18 percent lower risk in all causes of death. That’s right, just 10 minutes — and you don’t even have to break a sweat!
What’s more, the results indicated that those who engaged in leisurely physical activity for two and a half hours to five hours per week (the recommended amount) saw a decreased mortality risk of a whopping 31 percent. And even further, those who exercised for 25 hours experienced a 46 percent decrease! So if you’ve ever needed a reason to get off your booty and dance around the house, here it is!
The study also noted that those who participated in more rigorous exercise experienced even more health benefits. According to the research, one minute of vigorous exercise garnered the same benefits as two minutes of leisurely exercise. If you’re strapped for time, like so many working adults, harder workouts for smaller amounts might be a helpful solution. Nonetheless, if you can find time to do a short, moderate yoga flow once a week or some other type of exercise you truly enjoy, you will still reap the benefits. Sounds doable, doesn’t it?
