Homes to Love
Rachelle, her fiancé, and her daughter moved into their “forever” home about six months ago. “The house looks beautiful and has a great feel inside and out,” she says. But she admits the living room is “bare and unfinished."
Rachelle hopes to use this living space primarily for special occasions, but also for general relaxation. “It’s essentially a room for the adults to retreat to,” she says. “I can see myself sipping coffee and reading a book on the couch.” While homes+ stylist Fiona loved the oversized white sofas and bay window that floods the room with beautiful light, she felt the decor “lacked a bit of personality and warmth” and set out to bring the space in line with the rest of the home’s country provincial aesthetic.

The Living Room Makeover
The coffee table was a perfect focal point, but a little dark and foreboding, so Fiona lightened the mood with a white linen table runner. She added a tray featuring vases and candles of varying heights and balanced the look with symmetrically placed books, giving the table a sophisticated French provincial feel.
Fiona then filled out the room’s empty nooks with an elegant floor lamp and an indoor plant in a basket. Some lovely patterned and textured cushions broke up the blizzard of white on the sofas, while botanical prints add a pop of color and interest to the wall.

Rachelle couldn’t be happier with the result. “I love the earthy tones and the overall inviting feel of the room,” she says. “It’s inspired me to want to style the whole house! It’s amazing what new items can do to the overall look. I’d like to continue the theme into other areas.”
Fiona's Style Tips
1) Nothing complements a bay window like an ottoman. It emphasizes the space and allows more people to comfortably gather for special occasions.
2) Indoor plants add instant warmth. Here, I used a weeping fig tree, or ficus, which thrives in bright light. The small, pointy leaves work well for a classic country vibe.
3) If you have a few plants in pots, vary their containers. Woven baskets like this one provide texture in neutral tones.
4) White color schemes don’t have to be cold. A few highlight hues maintain the elegance and bring a room to life without overpowering it.
