If you’ve ever tried to lose weight (and who hasn’t?), then you’re familiar with this scenario: You’ve worked hard and the pounds are coming off, but the flab on your arms and thighs doesn’t seem to be going anywhere. When calorie-counting and cardio won’t melt those stubborn inches away, the Isavera Fat Freezing System could be the answer you’re looking for.

The Isavera Fat Freezing System comes in two versions — one for arms (Buy on Amazon, $89.90) and one for thighs (Buy on Amazon, $90.90). Keep reading to find out how it works — and whether it’s right for you.

What is fat freezing — and does it work?

Fat freezing, or cryolipolysis, was first cleared by the FDA in 2010, under the brand name CoolSculpting. Basically, cryolipolysis uses cold temperatures to break down fat cells, which are more susceptible to the effects of cold than other types of cells.

If you’ve ever had a wart frozen off, then you understand how freezing things off of your body works; this is the same idea, except it freezes the fat off, without harming your skin and other tissues.

“Fat is more temperature-sensitive than your skin,” UCLA professor and plastic surgeon Jason Roostaeian, MD, told Vogue in 2018. “It goes through the cell death process before your skin does.”

But does fat freezing really work? It seems to! In fact, a 2015 study in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery showed fat freezing to be a safe and promising alternative to liposuction and other, more invasive weight-loss methods

When CoolSculpting first became available, thousands of people flocked to doctors to see if this new treatment could be the weight loss cure-all they’d been searching for. With proven results for destroying fat cells in areas of the body where those last few pounds just won’t budge, fat freezing was an instant hit. The drawback? Its price tag. A typical session can range between $2,000 and $4,000 — out of reach for many of us.

How does the Isavera Fat Freezing System work?

Like CoolSculpting, the Isavera fat freezing system works by targeting specific areas of the body where fat likes to set up shop and never leave. When those fat cells are exposed to cold, they crystalize (or freeze), which leads to their death. Once the fat cells die and break down, your lymphatic system is able to eliminate them permanently, effectively removing fat. While you won’t necessarily shed pounds, over time, you could see up to a 25 percent fat reduction in treatment areas.

Unlike the technology used in your doctor’s office, however, there’s no machine to deliver the chill with Isavera’s at-home treatment. Instead, you’re working with an easy-to-wear, patent-pending Velcro neoprene belt that can be placed around the waist, stomach, thighs, or any other area you’d like to focus on. Its cold element comes from built-in pockets that house specially-formulated, dual-action gel packs that you chill in the freezer prior to use until they reach ideal temperatures for fat freezing — between 30.2 and 39.2 degrees.

Board-certified neurologist Dr. Ari Magil, M.D., is quoted on the company’s website as saying that “Isavera, when used as directed, is a promising technique for obtaining targeted fat loss in problem areas that would be very difficult to obtain from diet and exercise alone.”

Buy the thigh-sculpting system at Amazon ($90.90)

Why we like it:

  • Easy to use
  • Affordable
  • Comes with body fat caliper, measuring tape, and massage tool

To use the Isavera Fat Freezing System, simply place the pre-chilled gel packs into the pockets of the wrap. Tighten the cold-isolation belt around the areas you want to target and wear for the recommended amount of time. Choose from the arm system or the thigh system — or get both! As fat cells die off, you’ll gradually begin to notice results. (Some users report seeing results in as few as three weeks, but it more commonly takes up to three months or more.)

This user is thrilled with her results: “I’ve had [this] for a few days already and so far I’ve lost a half-inch around my arms! This kit is so effective and they really give you everything you need from measuring, fat percentage, massager, and of course the fat freezing system itself. I love this. If you had a hard time struggling with fat loss in your arms like I have in the past, this will definitely help you. … The system is pretty easy to use too. Just lay the mini ice packs in the freezer overnight. Be sure to lay them flat though! The arm belts are made very well and and so are the ice packs. I’m going to continue to use this till I have lost as much arm fat as possible!

Another happy customer shares her experience: “Don’t hesitate, this works! I’ve always struggled with those ‘problem’ spots when trying to lose weight with diet and exercise.
I’d heard all about CoolSculpting but wasn’t willing to pay the price. … The belts that wraps around the leg can accommodate different sizes as you only use the amount of ice packs that you need. … The ice packs are definitely not your typical ice packs, after an hour wrapped around my leg, they were still very cold when I took them out of their pockets. Keep in mind that this is not a quick fix and you need to be committed to it. With proper diet and exercise you will get results. This product is not in place of diet and exercise, it’s in addition to it, to help those stubborn areas that just do not seem to leave no matter what we do.”
