From the way someone hangs their toilet paper to the amount of milk and sugar they put in their coffee, people’s preferences vary. Usually it’s easy to deal with other people’s likings — except when it comes to bananas, apparently. A fitness Instagram account recently asked its followers to choose the perfect banana, and the photo is dividing the internet.
So far, almost 5,000 people have liked the photo, which is of a ring of bananas arranged in order of ripeness. In the picture, 1 is an unripe, slightly green banana and 15 is an overripe, brown-speckled banana. Whoever runs the fitness_meals account that originally posted the image says they would be a 5 or a 6. The comment section looks like a numbers soup, with answers running the gamut. Instagram user jaredkerns wrote, “My kids will not touch them if they are over 5!” while user ur2l84me said they preferred a riper banana. “I like mine at a 8 or 9 and for smoothies at a 10/11. My great-grandmother used to force us to eat ’em at a 15…would say they were at point …the sweetest! No granny no!” Beckieinnc88 added, “If you’re cooking or baking with them you want as close to 15 as possible.”
Bananas are a versatile fruit, but are they a good breakfast food? According to Daryl Gioffre, DC, bananas are a great source of fiber, magnesium, and potassium — the only downside is that they’re full of sugar. “Bananas seem like the perfect option to grab and go in the morning, but with a closer look, you’ll find that bananas eaten alone aren’t the best option because they’re 25 percent sugar and moderately acidic,” he told Byrdie. As a result, your energy levels will come crashing down in a few hours after your sugar high ends.
But that doesn’t mean these delicious yellow fruits are off the table in the mornings. Gioffre recommends pairing your nanner with a healthy fat (like peanut butter) and/or a spice or herb to neutralize its acidity. This will slow your body’s metabolization, preventing your insulin from spiking.
Life would be a whole lot sadder without bananas. (How could you do away with banana smoothies, banana breads, and frozen chocolate-covered bananas?!) Fortunately, you don’t have to give them up — you just need to make sure you’re being smart about how you eat these superfoods.
