If your kids tell you they want pizza for breakfast, you may want to listen — and even take their advice yourself. It turns out the deliciously doughy food may be a good alternative to a traditional breakfast, as it’s reportedly healthier for you than cereal.
That’s right: You no longer have to feel guilty about heating up that leftover slice from the night before while you’re rushing to get ready for work. A nutrition expert has confirmed that pizza is packed with protein — something your body desperately needs to get through the day.
“You may be surprised to find out that an average slice of pizza and a bowl of cereal with whole milk contain nearly the same amount of calories,” explained Chelsey Amer, MS, RDN, CDN to The Daily Meal. “However, pizza packs a much larger protein punch, which will keep you full and boost satiety throughout the morning.”
A lot of breakfast cereals are also high in sugar, so swapping out the Frosted Flakes or Fruit Loops for a lovely slice of Italy’s finest could certainly make for a more balanced meal for you or your kids.
“A slice of pizza contains more fat and much less sugar than most cold cereals, so you will not experience a quick sugar crash,” Amer said.
However, another nutritionist has come along to ruin all the fun — er, we mean set the record straight.
“If you have a pizza that is heavily laden with cheese and pepperoni, then that’s not a good decision, but if it has lots of vegetables then it could be a good option,” dietician Priya Tew explained.
So, should you order that extra large veggie pizza tonight for the family and save a few slices for tomorrow’s breakfast? Sounds like you have official permission to go for it!
