Cheese is that ooey-gooey friend that we cling to when times get hard. Had a bad day? Eat pizza. Need a snack? Grab a piece of cheese and a glass of wine. No matter what, cheese is always there for us, whether it’s in a cake, piled high on a stack of nachos, or spread on a cracker. But, there is just one problem with our savory friend — it’s loaded with calories and saturated fats.

Is cheese good for you? That is the ultimate question, isn’t it? According to Sara Hass, a registered dietitian nutritionist, cheese is all about balance.
“By balance I mean choosing cheeses with great flavor, so that you’ll need less,” Hass told USA Today. Balance also means not over-indulging and learning other ways to use cheese instead of sitting down with a hunk of it.”
While sitting down with a hunk of cheese sounds appetizing, Hass recommends vouching for cheeses that have a strong flavor. Soft cheeses, for example, tend to have less fat than hard cheeses. But, that doesn’t mean you should give up on hard cheese altogether. In fact, hard cheese and soft cheese both contain about the same amount of fat, protein, saturated fat, calcium, and sodium.
Because it’s hard to talk ourselves into stopping once we’ve started snacking, Hass suggests pre-portioning cheese ahead of time, so you won’t get lost in the cheese and Netflix abyss. And, go with quality cheeses, not only because you deserve it, but because processed cheeses are “tempting to overeat.”
