A Green Superfood Smoothie Recipe to Fuel Your Morning Right

Tags:

Green smoothies have quickly graduated from health fad to breakfast staple. This may be because green smoothies are a great way to get your leafy greens in first thing in the morning, which helps to promote healthy eating all day long. The key in building the perfect green smoothie is to balance the sweet and savory elements of a diverse array of fruits and vegetables, and include at least one ingredient that imparts a smooth texture. In this case, a perfectly ripe avocado does just the trick in creating that creamy, smoothie feel. We also throw in half a banana for its added potassium and subtle, sweet taste. We chose spinach as our leafy green veggie because of its myriad health benefits, including high levels of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants. And last but not least, be sure to seek out fresh, cold-pressed almond milks which are now available (rather than the shelf-stable boxed varieties) for your smoothie base, as they make for a much tastier (and healthier) result.

To begin your day in a healthful way, kick off breakfast with this superfood-packed green smoothie by following the recipe below.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup almond milk
  • 1/2 cup baby spinach
  • 1 avocado, coarsely chopped
  • 1⁄2 banana
  • 1 Tbsp. almond butter
  • 1 Tbsp. honey (optional)
  • Pinch of ground cinnamon, plus extra to serve (optional)

How to Make It

  1. Process all of the above ingredients along with a handful of ice cubes in a blender until smooth. Serve the smoothie topped with extra cinnamon, if desired.

Note: Almond butter is available from select health-food shops and the health-food section of select supermarkets. If it is unavailable where you shop, substitute unsalted peanut butter. If you are allergic to almonds or do not prefer almond milk, substitute all-natural coconut milk, cashew milk, or any other non-dairy milk of your choice instead.
