This ‘Dinosaur Egg’ Hack Will Keep Your Half-Eaten Avocados Fresh For a Week
How often do you cut up an avocado and actually eat the whole thing in one sitting? Unless you’re making a batch of guacamole, you most likely have at least half of it leftover — and it usually doesn’t look so appetizing when you break it back out to eat later on.
There are a ton of tricks out there for keeping it fresh for as long as possible — lemon juice, olive oil, even freezing it — but we’ve all still experienced the disappointment of our avos going bad before we can finish them off. Now, a new trick making the rounds on social media claims we can avoid that with a strategic first slice.
Margaret Drisi, a CrossFit trainer from Chicago, shared what she calls the “dinosaur egg” hack. The name might sound ridiculous, but there’s nothing silly about how long she was able to keep her avocado fresh. Instead of immediately slicing her avocado in half (like most of us do), Drisi takes just the tip off the top and digs into the fruit from there. It really does resemble something a bit prehistoric — and keeps the avocado from turning brown for a full week.
Take a look to see how she does it:
Mind blown? You’re not alone. We can’t believe Drisi doesn’t even bother covering the top with lemon juice or oil, just places it in a regular plastic container. The combo of the avocado’s peel and keeping the seed in the middle seems to be all you really need for a week of avo goodness.
This is perfect for anyone who likes adding a small amount of the superfood to their meals on a regular basis. It also goes to show how looking at something from a different perspective can totally change the way you think about it. Who would have thought starting from the top of the avocado could make such a huge difference?
Give it a try the next time you’re craving just a bit of avocado and we’re sure you’ll be just as pleased with the long-lasting results!
