How annoying is it to buy a fresh head of lettuce and then watch to turn soggy and brown after even just a day or two? Fear not! There’s a super easy fix to keep lettuce fresh for longer — for even up to a month.
This tip comes from food blogger Lama Bazzi, who says it helps her keep lettuce fresh for weeks at a time. It really couldn’t be easier: Bazzi puts lettuce in a mason jar, fills it entirely with water, puts the lid on the jar, and places it in the fridge. That’s it!
Bazzi was also kind enough to do an update video a month after she showed her followers the hack, and voila! She’s got green, crunchy lettuce well over 30 days later.
Can you really leave the jar attended for a full month? Bazzi recommends changing the water in the jar every one to three days. If you place a paper towel on top of the jar before you screw on the lid, it’ll absorb moisture over time, and you can go up to five days without swapping out that water. It’s perfect for if you’re going on vacation or taking a trip and don’t want your produce to go bad in the meantime. Plus, a quick water change every few days is a lot easier (not to mention, cheaper) than having to buy new lettuce every time your current selection begins to go bad.
