Wedding Fails So Bad You’ll Be Glad You Weren’t There
If you were nervous about your nuptials (or someone else’s), allow us to put everything into perspective for you. Seven people from the Now to Love team shared the worst things they have ever seen happen, or been a part of, at a wedding.
These wedding horror stories will have you thinking twice before you RSVP “yes” to your next wedding. From greedy bridal parties to drunk uncles, we dare you not to have a laugh at these wedding day fiascoes.
My Best Friend’s Wedding
My friend from school got married last year and asked me to be her bridesmaid. From the beginning, there were issues. I had to act as her maid of honor, but she didn’t want to offend the other bridesmaids, so I wasn’t allowed to be called that.
She also decided she’d buy the bridesmaids’ dresses online without asking us for measurements. The dresses, from China, were poorly made and didn’t fit any of us. She also asked us to have the dresses altered (and to cover the cost ourselves).
My dress was multiple sizes too small, so she told me to lose weight to fit into it. After the other bridesmaids complained, she bought new dresses. Mine was three sizes too big and it cost me more than $100 in alterations — not to mention the cost of jewelry and shoes.
The entire day was very intense. We were expected to give engagement gifts and there was a wishing well at the wedding. The entire thing cost me more than $1,000.
Can’t Wait for the Big Day
A couple whose wedding I was invited to set up their gift registry so that every time someone purchased something, they would receive a notification. One morning over coffee, several weeks before the wedding, they thanked us for the cooking set we’d gotten them.
Whatever happened to a good-old fashioned thank you note and an element of surprise? It feels rather spoiled, like they were opening their presents before Christmas day.
What money?
My husband’s parents took money that was given to us as wedding gifts for themselves.
Disclaimer: It’s custom for Korean parents to gift each other money when their kids get married, but not to take money given directly to the kids away from them. This is basically what happened:
Husband’s aunt: “What did you do with the money I sent you? Did you buy a nice piece of furniture or something?”
Husband: “What money?”
Back off!
My uncle flew in singers from Serbia for both my cousins’ weddings. They walked around the guests and just sang at them until they gave them $50, or whatever. I think it’s expected from the singers, but still.
They were already paid to be there and had their flights and hotels paid for. They probably brought in an extra $2,000 by the end of the night.
Well, that’s something…
I worked at a wedding with an open bar, and everyone obviously got really drunk. When I cut one of the uncles off, he grabbed a vodka bottle and tried to break it on the floor, but it just bounced and hit another guest in the face. The guest started bleeding, a brawl broke out, and cops had to come.
Unfortunately for the couple, the wedding finished early.
They had good cake, though.
Stingy Bride and Groom
My boyfriend officiated his friend’s wedding, and asked me to be his plus one. Not only was he running the event more than actually being a guest, but I also didn’t know anyone there.
They told him he couldn’t bring a guest because they didn’t want to pay for my meal. He not only gave them a $100 gift, it probably wasn’t more than $40 per plate.
