More Than 500,000 Wind-Up Toys Recalled Due to Choking Hazard

If you recently bought a wind-up toy for your child or grandchild, heads up: More than 500,000 wind-up toys are being recalled by Kids Preferred, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, after they were found to be a choking hazard. Sold at stores like Walmart, Target, and Carter’s, these plush animals were available from January 2016 to August 2017.

The Carter’s, Child of Mine, Guess How Much I Love You and Just One You brands of the “Waggy Musical Toys” were recalled after the company found that the metal post and handle of the wind-up mechanism could detach and potentially be easily swallowed by kids.

Thankfully, no injuries have been reported so far, but there have been six incidents of the parts from the handle detaching from the toys.

“Toy safety is our primary concern at Kids Preferred. We, in conjunction with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, their Fast Track recall program and Health Canada, initiated the voluntary recall of certain Waggy Musical Toys strictly as a precautionary move. We take very seriously the confidence and trust our customers have placed in our products and our main goal is to continue providing them with only the safest products,” Kids Preferred said in a statement to GoodHousekeeping.com.

If you’re concerned about a Kids Preferred toy you bought, you can see the full recall list here. When you check the list, be sure you’re looking at the model number and batch codes printed on the smallest sewn-in label behind the care label on your toy to see if they correspond.

If your toy was included in the recall, you can call Kids Preferred at 888-968-9268 Monday through Friday or email them at recall@kidspreferred.com for a free replacement toy.
