This Surprising Cleaning Trick Gets Queen Elizabeth’s Royal Jewels Extra Sparkly

“Gin and water are handy for giving the royal diamonds a little extra sparkle,” royal dresser Angela Kelly revealed in her book, The Other Side of the Coin: The Queen, the Dresser and the Wardrobe (Buy on Amazon, $29.22). Gin also happens to be one of Elizabeth’s favorite drinks to indulge in, so it makes sense they always have it stocked. She might even enjoy a swig before they start shining the jewels!

Kelly doesn’t go into more details about any specific technique, but we’d guess they use a one-to-one mixture of the liquids to give the diamonds a good spritz or swipe before Elizabeth dons them.

According to the Daily Mail, Kelly is one of the queen’s closest and most trusted personal advisors. She made sure to get Elizabeth’s blessing before sharing a few style secrets, like another clever hack for using washing up liquid (what they call dish soap across the pond) to quickly get rid of any hairspray stains on her clothes while getting ready for events. And despite obviously having access to the finest and fanciest designers, Elizabeth is apparently a fan of scoring a good deal with Kelly finding “reasonably priced silk in bargain buckets” to create her outfits.

There is one duty Kelly mentions in the book that seems a bit less fun for her, though: Breaking in the queen’s shoes. They both wear a UK size four (size six here in the States) and Kelly reveals herself as the “flunky” who wears new pairs out until they’re nice and cozy for Elizabeth. We can’t lie, we’d love it if someone could do that for our shoes, but it definitely seems like a perk reserved for high ranking royals.

The next time we see Elizabeth walking around in a cute pair of shoes, stain-free outfit, and showing off her extra sparkly jewels, we’ll certainly think about Kelly helping her out behind the scenes!
