No Corkscrew? No Problem With This Genius Wine Opener Hack From ‘Property Brothers’ Star Jonathan Scott

We’ve all been there: Eagerly unwrapping the top of a wine bottle only to have the crushing realization that there’s no corkscrew on hand. That, or the trusty opener you’ve relied on for so long finally bit the dust just when you were going to toast a celebration (or unwind at the end of the day). Whatever the case may be, you need to keep a genius wine opener hack from Property Brothers star Jonathan Scott in mind the next time this vexing vino problem strikes.

Scott is known for his handyman skills alongside his brother, Drew, on their HGTV series. So, when his girlfriend, actress Zooey Deschanel, wanted to pop a bottle of wine one night — but he realized he’s not the “fancy type of guy who just has a corkscrew lying around” — he got creative.

Don’t worry, there’s no power tools involved in his technique. All you need is a screwdriver, screw, and hammer. Take a look at his wine opener hack:

How easy is that? He just screws in the screw far enough to get a good old on the cork, then uses the back of the hammer to slide it right out! This is so much better that other hacks we’ve seen over the years that end up destroying the cork rather than removing it, or force it down into the wine to bob around.

We also appreciate his jokes about the wine being a “great year” and “beautiful varietal” while not actually having any idea what any of that means. Deschanel was clearly pleased with the results as she and Scott cheers each other before taking a sip (and he gives her a sweet smooch on her cheek).

We’re also glad he didn’t have to dig into any tools other than a few basic ones we all have shoved away in a closet to get the job done. Now, who’s ready to drink up?
