Princess Diana’s Reaction to These Iconic Photos Prove She Was Always Classy

At the tender age of 20, Princess Diana became the object of the media’s attention when she married Prince Charles, but the world had already fallen for the good-natured blonde. While “The People’s Princess” was still working at a nursery as Lady Diana Spencer, she completely stole our hearts—and all it took was an iconic photo and very relatable quote to seal the deal.
Arthur Edwards, a long-time photographer who captured the memorable photo of a young Diana holding two kids in her arms, said it was never his intention to embarrass the nursery school teacher with the photo. So when the media labeled it a fashion faux-pas, we couldn’t help but empathize with her.

The September 1980 photo in question features Diana holding two tots from her nursery. As the sun shines, you can see the silhouette of Diana’s legs through her calf-length skirt because she is not wearing a slip underneath. We hardly fault her for her fashion decision because, let’s face it, wearing multiple layers isn’t always conducive to easily corralling a classroom full of toddlers.
“Everybody doesn’t believe this but it is the gospel truth—halfway through, the sun came out and revealed those beautiful legs,” Edwards told TODAY. “In many ways, I’m glad the sun came out because it made it an iconic picture,” and one that is often mentioned when he holds lectures about his work.

Of course, the tabloids took the photo and ran with it, pasting it on the cover of magazines everywhere. A horrified Diana was quoted as telling Prince Charles: “I don’t want to be known as the girlfriend who had no petticoat.”
Today, almost 20 years after her death, it’s obvious that these photos did little to hurt Princess Diana‘s reputation. We really doubt there’s anything that could make us think Diana was something other than a total class act. In fact, revisiting this photo now only makes us miss her more.
