For acting legend Kate Winslet, age is nothing but a number. The Mare of Easttown star, 45, recently opened up about how she’s embraced the changes that have come along with getting older, and how she’s altered her makeup routine over the years to embrace a more natural look.

Welcoming Change

Speaking to Allure, the Academy Award winning actress and L’Oréal Paris’ newest spokesperson talked about her partnership with the beauty brand. “They celebrate women at every age,” she said. “And yes, it’s a beauty brand, but at the same time, they talk about cost-efficient ways of taking care of your skin and feeling good about yourself.” This is a sentiment that’s important at any age.

During the pandemic, she admits that she’s had more time to notice how her skin and features have changed as she’s gotten older. “I’ve noticed my face and how it’s changing a little bit more in the last year because there’s just been more time with yourself to look at those things,” Winslet said. “What I’ve found is that — to my relief — I’m just going easy on myself. I’m at an age now where things are changing all the time. The skin on my neck is really different now, the skin on the back of my hands needs some serious TLC.” We can certainly relate.

Winslet says there are days when she simply brushes her teeth, applies some moisturizer, and heads right out the door. She likes to sport a totally natural face and let her skin breathe. Other times, she enjoys and has fun with the process of putting on makeup — but she doesn’t apply it in the same way she used to.

Winslet has always loved a “nice, juicy lipstick,” and her go-to shade is a beige-toned pink. She taps her lipstick straight on from the tube, and then gently uses her finger to smudge it out. “I’ve got quite a defined Cupid’s bow,” she says. “So I find if I use a pencil or a lip brush, then it looks almost too done. I used to like that look when I was younger, but I don’t really like that kind of perfect lip look now.”

Winslet is also a minimalist when it comes to foundation. She simply dots it on with a brush and then pats and blends the makeup in with her fingers. Her favorite foundation right now is L’Oréal Paris True Match Foundation (Buy on Amazon, $8.59), and she actually keeps two shades to use interchangeably depending on what’s going on with her skin at the moment.

Winslet shared that she applies makeup based on where she is in her menstrual cycle. “Depending on my cycle, my skin can be a little bit more inflamed,” she said. “At the beginning of my cycle, my skin is a lot more even. In the middle of my cycle, everything fires up a little bit, so I mix a couple of tones.” Isn’t that genius?

Winslet is definitely on to something. Research has shown that our skin behaves differently depending on where we are in our cycle, since hormones like estrogen and progesterone affect our skin. For example, if your skin is on the oilier side, you might notice more oil as you get closer to your period. And of course, if you’ve already begun perimenopause, these hormonal shifts can have a similar effect on skin, making it more sensitive at times.

All in all, Winslet says that she’s grateful to be where she is now, having a newfound appreciation for her natural beauty. “I didn’t used to like my curves as much as I love them now,” she told InStyle. “That sort of comes hand-in-hand with being in your late teens and early 20s and scrutinizing your body in ways that are just quite sad. I definitely had moments where I’d wish I wasn’t so curvy, and now I’m like, ‘Oh my God, thank God!’,” she laughed. Amen, sister.

Whatever Kate Winslet is doing to keep up her classic, timeless glow, it’s certainly working. We’re excited that we’ll be seeing and hearing more from this beauty queen about how we can feel more confident in our own skin, and embrace what Mother Nature gave us.
