In a Netflix Rut? Here’s How to Uncover Even More Things to Watch

Now's the best time to dig into some of the service's secret gems.

Anyone else getting a lot more use out of their Netflix accounts lately? The streaming service has helped many of us pass the time while we stay indoors during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, but it can quickly start to feel like we’ve run out of titles to click on.

Of course, with thousands of movies and TV shows — and more being added on a regular basis — it’s unlikely that’s actually true. But if you do feel like you’re stuck in a Netflix rut, you can break yourself out by digging into a few hidden genres codes.

Every genre has corresponding numbers to identify them. Once you know the number for any genre, you can add it to the end of “https://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/” and be taken to that usually more specific category’s page. For example, if you’re looking for something on the more whimsical side, you can put 1073915 at the end of the url and take a look at the titles sorted under “Oddballs & Outcasts.” If you’re in the mood for a suspenseful drama series, try 1189825 for “Bingeworthy Crime TV Shows.” There’s even a genre that’s literally called “Hidden Gems,” which you can find under 753215.

Here are a few more fun genres that you might want to check out:

That’s just just scratching the surface of hundreds of unique genres you can unlock with your browser. Netflix-Codes.com has a far more extensive list you can explore. Another website oddly known as Ogre’s Crypt has an even longer list, though some of the extremely specific genres do come up empty handed, so it’s a bit of a click-and-see game.

It’s also important to note that you can only use this to unlock the genres while using your computer to browse Netflix. However, it can help you add titles to your watch list that you would have otherwise missed out on and then can watch later on whatever device you’d like.

There’s no telling how long we’ll be in quarantine mode, so you might as well pack your watch list with all the goodies you can find!
