Christopher Plummer, Legendary ‘Sound of Music’ Actor, Has Died at 91

Christopher Plummer, the legendary actor known for roles in The Sound of Music, Knives Out, and an Oscar-winning performance in Beginners, has died at 91.

According to Deadline, Plummer passed away peacefully at his Connecticut home with his wife of 54 years, Elaine Taylor, by his side. His longtime manager, Lou Pitt, released the following statement:

“Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self deprecating humor and the music of words. He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us.”

Born Arthur Christopher Orme Plummer on December 13, 1929, in Toronto, Canada, he discovered a love of acting while attending high school in Montreal.

Along with his Academy Award, Plummer received several accolades throughout his career, including two Tony Awards, a Critics Choice Award, Screen Actors Guild Award, and the Canadian Screen Awards Lifetime Achievement Award.

Plummer began his career on stage and in small television roles, but made his big breakthrough as Captain Von Trapp in The Sound of Music in 1965. Decades later, fans still adore the classic film and fondly remember his chemistry with co-star Julie Andrews. The pair reunited on the cover of Vanity Fair in 2015 to celebrate the 50 year anniversary of the film and clearly still shared a great friendship — including bickering over snacks and calling each other sweet nicknames.

Our thoughts are with Plummer’s family, friends, and fans as we all mourn this loss of this great man.
