More Than 32,000 Pounds of Dried Beef Recalled for Possible Toxin Contamination

Tags:

Check your pantry: There’s a massive recall of heat-treated, shelf-stable beef products happening right now, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The government agency considers it a high health risk because the items in question may be contaminated with two types of harmful bacteria.

Iowa-based Pinnacle Foods Inc. has recalled 32,479 pounds of Armour Ground & Formed Sliced Dried Beef due to a processing issue that may have led to a contamination of staphylococcal enterotoxin and clostridial toxin. Both of these bacteria can lead to some serious illnesses, with staphylococcal enterotoxins causing food poisoning and toxic shock syndrome and clostridial toxins responsible for gangrenes and severe gastrointestinal diseases.

But before you panic and start chucking all your beef products in the trash, it’s worth first taking a close look at the labels to be sure they’re actually included in the recall. After all, you don’t want to throw away good food for nothing!
