This 2-Ingredient DIY Tea Will Flatten Your Tummy Before Summer

Bathing suit season is slowly creeping up on us — scary, we know. While all bodies are certainly “beach bodies” no matter the size and shape, you want to make sure you feel confident in your bathing suit this year. This tea made with turmeric and ginger could be your answer.

These days, you can’t read about natural remedies for weight-loss without hearing about turmeric. The bright-orange superfood is being touted for its myriad health benefits, and when combined with spicy ginger, it becomes a fat-burning elixir that will have you summer-ready in no time.

Studies have shown that curcumin, the main bioactive compound in turmeric, has the same anti-inflammatory effects as some prescription medications. Gingerol, the main bioactive compound in ginger, has demonstrated potent anti-inflammatory properties as well. So why are anti-inflammatories important to weight loss? Well, chronic inflammation — from things such as eating processed foods, stress, and lack of physical activity — cause the body to store fat. This can lead to weight-gain, as well as a host of other diseases. Adding foods with anti-inflammatory properties into your diet can help fight fat-storage and shed stubborn pounds!

What’s more, turmeric and ginger are both known for aiding digestion, which is key if you’re looking to lose weight and flatten that tummy. The chemical compounds in both ginger and turmeric are known for increasing bile production, which keeps digestive tract running smoothly. Additionally, their antioxidant qualities protect your cells from free-radical damage, which can also cause you to keep weight on. All in all, adding this health-boosting tea to your regimen loads the body with nutrients and can help shed unwanted fat.

How to Make Turmeric and Ginger Tea

It’s super easy — just follow the recipe below! If you’ve got fresh turmeric root, great! If not, you can use turmeric powder, no problem. This tea is great on its own, but you can also take some creative liberty. Add a few slices of lemon to boost its alkaline effects or a stick of cinnamon, which is great for stabilizing blood sugar.

  • 1-inch piece turmeric root, grated or cut into pieces OR 1 tsp. turmeric powder
  • 1-inch piece ginger, grated or sliced
  • 1 ½  cups water
  • Honey, to taste (optional)

  1. Bring water to a boil in medium saucepan on the stove.
  2. Add turmeric and ginger (and any other ingredients except honey), then reduce heat to medium and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes.
  3. Strain, add honey if desired, and enjoy.

If making your own tea is not your jam, don’t worry! Several affordable brands make turmeric and ginger tea, so all you need is access to some hot water to reap the same benefits! Easy, right? Try this one from tea company Rishi ($7.49, Amazon).
