Eating Salsa Burns Fat

Who knew the wonders that salsa could do for your body? Capsaicin, a plant compound found in peppers that gives salsa its fiery kick, activates fat-burning enzymes inside belly-fat cells, prompting the fat stores to burn themselves up. This compound also shuts down cravings for sugary carbs. The payoff: British researchers report that enjoying 1/2 cup of salsa can melt up to 4 pounds of belly fat in 6 months without making any other lifestyle changes.

Fresh Tomato Salsa

2 cups diced tomatoes

1/2 cup diced red peppers

1/4 cup diced white onions

3 Tbs. minced fresh cilantro

1 jalapeño, seeded and minced

Zest and juice of 1 lime

1 garlic clove, minced

Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Tip: For a smoother texture—more like jarred salsa—pulse half the salsa in a food processor, then stir back in.
