Believe it or not, the beloved Dick Van Dyke--star of the Dick Van Dyke Show, Mary Poppins, and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang--is 91 years old. And to celebrate, he's done something we're sure many people have been asking him to do for decades: Let us all in on his secrets for looking, feeling, and living a life that seems as fun and youthful as it ever has.
Van Dyke has just published a new book, Keep Moving: And Other Tips and Truths About Aging, a collection of candid, clear-cut lessons the star has concluded as he heads into his tenth decade of life. We swear, this man seems 30 years younger, right? Well, these three gems from his recent interview about the book are no doubt partly to thank for his ageless exuberance.
See the glass as half-full. By far, our favorite lesson the actor shared was his belief in the power of positivity. "It's more in my nature to be optimistic, I think," says Van Dyke. "I'm one of those people who gets up on the right side of the bed in the morning."
Choose joy. "The point [of life] is to enjoy. You have to pick what you enjoy doing, what fulfills you, what interests you. And I realize that's not possible for a lot of people," says Van Dyke. "As Thoreau said, a lot of people are living lives of quiet desperation. But almost anyone can find that one immersing hobby or pastime that they love to do."
Most importantly: Be as active as you possibly can. "Keep moving is the main thing. I get up and have a cup of coffee and go to the gym before I talk myself out of it," he says.
Those seem like powerful words of wisdom no matter what your age, right?
