Paul Sorvino, the critically acclaimed actor best known for Goodfellas and Law & Order, died yesterday at the age of 83 from natural causes. He is survived by wife Dee Dee Sorvino and three children, including Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino. Following the news of his passing, a video of Mira thanking her proud and tearful father in her 1996 Oscars acceptance speech went viral.
Sorvino was most famous for starring as mobster “Big” Paulie Cicero in 1990’s Goodfellas alongside Robert DeNiro, Ray Liotta, and Joe Pesci — so the clip of the actor crying at his daughter’s awards-night praise feels particularly poignant and unexpected. “When you give me this award, you honor my father Paul Sorvino, who has taught me everything I know about acting,” Sorvino said in her Oscars acceptance speech after winning for Mighty Aphrodite. “I love you very much dad.”
In response to this, Paul (who also attended the Oscars that year) immediately began crying in his seat and had to cover his face with his hands. Watch the video below.
Mira Sorvino also paid tribute to her father on Twitter yesterday, writing, “My father the great Paul Sorvino has passed. My heart is rent asunder — a life of love and joy and wisdom with him is over. He was the most wonderful father. I love him so much. I’m sending you love in the stars Dad as you ascend.”
Sorvino will be interred at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles, in the Garden of Legends — the same area Rudolph Valentino, Mickey Rooney, and Burt Reynolds, among others, have been laid to rest.
