Jason Carter, grandson of former president  Jimmy Carter, recently provided a heartfelt update on the 99-year-old’s health. Jimmy , who has been in hospice care for nearly 16 months, is navigating this phase of his life with the resilience that has marked his long career in public service.

Jason shared with Southern Living on June 5 that his grandfather is “experiencing the world as best he can.” The adjustment to life without his wife, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023, has been inconceivable. “After 77 years of marriage, none of us really understand what it’s like for him right now,” Jason said, emphasizing the deeply personal nature of their bond. “There are things about the spirit that you just can’t understand.”

Regarding Jimmy’s health, Jason noted that there has been no significant change. The former president is not always awake when family members visit, a testament to his fragile condition. Speaking at a mental health forum in honor of Rosalynn on May 14, Jason mentioned that while his grandfather’s life “is coming to an end,” he is still present in spirit, according to NBC News. When asked about his own health, Jimmy himself said to his grandson, “Well, I don’t know myself,” reflecting the uncertainty with which he faces his situation.

Since February 2023, Jimmy has been receiving hospice care at his home in Plains, Georgia. Rosalynn, diagnosed with dementia earlier in 2023, also entered hospice care shortly before her death. In a poignant moment, Jimmy left hospice to attend her funeral in November 2023, touching many who saw him in a wheelchair, covered by a blanket embroidered with “The Carters.”

The former president’s last public appearance was just before his 99th birthday at the Plains Peanut Festival. A video on X (formerly Twitter) showed Jimmy and Rosalynn riding through the festival in an SUV. They celebrated together one last time in their beloved hometown. Plains, Georgia, remains a central part of the Carter legacy. Plans for his funeral already began, including a state ceremony in Washington, D.C., and a service in Plains. Their home, where they lived since 1961, will become a donation to the National Park Service.

Life since hospice care

Despite significant physical challenges, Jimmy Carter spends his days watching baseball and cherishing family visits. His health has been a topic of public concern, especially since entering hospice. Grandson Josh Carter described his grandfather to People in August as being in “the final chapter” but still fully himself. Jimmy Carter continues to feel the love and well-wishes from those around him.

In February 2023, the Carter Center announced in a statement that Jimmy Carter had chosen to forego further medical intervention in favor of hospice care. This decision came after several hospital stays and treatments for metastatic melanoma in 2015, which he overcame with remarkable strength. “He has the full support of his family and his medical team. The Carter family asks for privacy during this time and is grateful for the concern shown by his many admirers,” the statement read.
