Heads Up: Thousands of Ceiling Fans With Incorrect Instructions Recalled

CPSC

Heads up, ceiling fan owners: Hunter Fan just announced a recall of 168,000 ceiling fans nationwide due to a falling risk. It was recently discovered that there was an error in the installation instructions for the Hunter Contempo ceiling fans that could cause parts of the fan to fall.

The owner's manuals for the fans in question — Hunter Contempo ceiling fan models 59176 and 59174 — instruct consumers to install a light globe incorrectly, which puts the globe at risk of falling down and poses an impact injury hazard to people, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). Though fortunately no injuries have been reported yet, Hunter has received 38 reports of the light globe falling due to the incorrect instructions in the United States and two reports in Canada.

The fans were sold at Costco stores nationwide and online at Costco.com from January 2016 through August 2017 for about $130. Refurbished fans were also sold online during the same period on eBay, Amazon, and Groupon. Customers who purchased a Hunter Contempo fan during that time period are encouraged to check their fan and make sure that their light globe was installed correctly by turning it clockwise until it stops and is resting firmly in place. Meanwhile, Costco and Hunter Fan Company are reaching out to all known purchasers to provide them new instructions for installing the light globe.

We don't know about you, but it's one of our worst fears to have parts of a ceiling fan come crashing down on us or someone we love. If you have a ceiling fan, it's definitely worth checking out right now to be sure it doesn't have this issue — for the sake of the safety of both you and your loved ones.
