If you’re one of those people who prefers to snuggle on the sofa rather than exercise at the crack of dawn, we’ve got some good news for you! According to a recent study, simply relaxing in a hot bath can burn up to 130 calories, which is just as much as a 30-minute run!
That's right, you can get away with shedding some extra fat with no exercise at all.
Researchers at Loughborough University sought to find out whether passive heating was just as beneficial as physical exercise. So they conducted a study that included 14 men and had them go through two exercises: bike-riding for an hour and staying in a hot bath for an hour. During both activities, their blood sugar levels and the number of calories being burned were tracked.

By the end of the study, they found that cycling burns a lot more calories per hour. But at the same time, they discovered that staying in a hot bath can burn a significant amount of calories too. Even better, hot baths were proven to help regulate blood sugar levels and lower blood pressure.
"This suggests that repeated passive heating may contribute to reducing chronic inflammation, which is often present with long-term diseases, such as type 2 diabetes," said Dr. Steve Faulkner, a researcher who led the study.
Now, before you make a run for your bath salts, keep in mind that this study was only done on males. Since females’ bodies could react a bit differently, chances are you might not burn off as much as you would for a 30-minute run. But even so, this revolutionary study goes to show that it is possible to burn more calories without lifting a finger!
