Use This Handy Kitchen Appliance to Make Superb French Toast In Less Than 10 Minutes

When it comes to whipping up a brunch for Mother’s Day, there are a few must-haves on my list including bacon, eggs, and hash browns. These breakfast foods are hearty and salty. So, it’s nice to have a sweet dish to balance that out. My mom loves French toast and waffles, but cooking both of them separately is time-consuming and requires lots of cleaning up afterwards.

Fortunately, mom can now enjoy both of her sugary favorites in one this year, thanks to a recipe I found for French toast waffles!

Why You Should Cook French Toast in a Waffle Iron

As you already know, making French Toast involves frying bread that’s been soaked in a custard-like batter on both sides until it’s golden brown. Cooking it the traditional way (in a pan) is a nuisance; I often have to adjust the heat to avoid overheating the pan. This usually causes one side to get crispier than the other.

The better way to cook French toast and get it evenly crisp? Cook it in a waffle iron! This handy appliance cooks both sides of the French toast at the same time, which means you won’t have to toss and turn it in a skillet.

The waffle maker also creates little wells within bread to hold more maple syrup — a delicious indulgence for your sweet tooth. Plus, you will enjoy two classic breakfast dishes at the same time without having to individually cook each one.

How To Make French Toast Waffles

To make French toast waffles, follow this quick and simple recipe from AllRecipes. For a richer taste, use heavy whipping cream, half-and-half, buttermilk in place of whole milk for a richer taste. And for a fun twist, use cinnamon-swirl, French, or Hawaiian sweet bread in place of brioche.

Ingredients:

  • 4 (1/2-inch thick) pieces brioche
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Dash of ground cinnamon
  • 1 pinch salt
  • Cooking spray

Directions:

  1. Preheat a waffle iron according to manufacturer’s instructions and spray the top and bottom grate with cooking spray.
  2. In a bowl, whisk together the milk, eggs, maple syrup, vanilla extract, cinnamon, and salt until fully combined. Dip each bread slice in the egg mixture to coat both sides completely. Lift bread with a fork or slotted spatula to allow the excess egg mixture to drain back into the bowl. Place the soak bread slices on a rimmed baking sheet or plate and let rest for about 2 minutes to let the mixture sink in.
  3. Place the soaked bread in the preheated waffle iron. Gently close the lid without forcing it down and smushing the bread. Cook according to the manufacturer’s instructions until golden brown, three to five minutes. Repeat with remaining slices.
  4. Serve with maple syrup. Makes two servings.

My Experience Making This Recipe

When I tried this recipe out myself, my waffle iron was large enough to fit all four slices of brioche at the same time. In less than 10 minutes, I had four perfectly cooked French toast waffles that I drizzled with syrup and served with butter and fresh blueberries.

Taking the first bite, the French toast had a nice maple flavor that balanced well with the caramel-y, spiced taste of the vanilla extract and cinnamon. The blueberries did their part by adding a tangy burst of flavor. Plus, the crispiness on each piece of bread was a nice texture bonus that really took this French toast to a new level.

I’m shocked I didn’t think of making French toast in my waffle iron before, especially since it has so many uses for cooking. However, I’ll be using it this Sunday to whip up breakfast for my mom, and on those weekends when I want a sweet treat in the morning!
