While most women experience some facial redness from time to time, if you’re prone to having a flushed face or find yourself consistently dealing with red, blotchy, and bumpy skin, you may have rosacea. With 14 million US adults reported to be living with rosacea, it’s a common skin condition, to say the least. Luckily, there are plenty of options out there that you can use to help quell its symptoms. The beauty aisles of your favorite stores are stocked with the best products for rosacea, if you know what to look for. Keep reading to find out more about the condition and the best products to give you relief.

What is rosacea?

Rosacea is an inflammatory skin condition that causes skin redness and visible blood vessels on the face, particularly across the forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Typically seen in fair-skinned women, the condition can vary greatly from person to person, with symptoms that range from general redness to thick, swollen skin and acne-like breakouts.

What causes rosacea?

While the root cause of rosacea may still be unknown, researchers have made several discoveries about the condition that may hold clues to its origin. Rosacea tends to run in families, leading many to believe it may be a genetic disorder. Most sufferers also react to a bacteria called bacillus oleronius and have higher predispositions for an intestinal bug called H pylori, both of which may be underlying causes.

There are also a number of factors that can trigger rosacea flare-ups, including sunlight, wind, extreme temperatures, alcohol, spicy foods, stress, vigorous exercise, harsh skincare products, and drugs that dilate the blood vessels, like some blood pressure medications. While some of these may be harder than others to avoid, being aware of the things in your life that can trigger flare-ups is the first step to clearer skin.

How to Treat Rosacea

Currently, there is no cure for rosacea. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t things that you can do to keep it under control. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there are six ways patients can keep the condition at bay: cleanse your face twice daily, use a cream moisturizer, apply sunscreen (even on cloudy days!), carefully test new skincare products, avoid rough skin practices, such as rubbing and scrubbing of the face, and opt for skincare products that are made with rosacea in mind.
