We had to be the bearers of bad news, but in just 21 days, summer will give way to fall, ushering in a brand new (chillier!) season. If you’re anything like us, however, you’re on the hunt for the perfect transitional jacket for 2019. It’s just the thing for when you’re not quite ready to put away all those summer tees, tanks, and dresses in favor of the chunky sweaters, long sleeves, and thick trousers you’ll be bundled up in for months to come.

Types of Transitional Jackets for Fall

There are lots of different transitional jackets you can throw on over a summer ensemble to breathe new life — and warmth — into your look. A few of the most popular options include:

  • *Anoraks: Anoraks are simply waterproof jackets that are typically equipped with hoods and drawstring waists for braving the elements.
  • *Leather or Faux Leather: Crafted from animal hyde or synthetic materials, these fall staples not only provide an added layer of heat, they lend tremendous style to practically any ensemble.
  • *Denim: Created way back in 1880 by Levi’s founder Levi Strauss, the denim jacket is a wardrobe basic that acts as an easy neutral cover in between seasons that can be embellished for added flair.
  • *Trenches: Though the trenchcoat was originally designed to provide an alternate to heavy military outerwear, it was adopted by the fashion industry — most notably, Burberry and Aquascutum —as far back as the 1850s. It typically features a double-breasted front, wide lapels, a storm flap, and a belted waist.

In addition to style, your coat’s aesthetic and fit, as well as your personal taste, will all play a role in helping you to select the best fall jacket for you. Luckily, you don’t have to choose just one! Keep scrolling for First for Women’s best fall jacket finds.
