Whether you’re shopping for yourself of searching for a great gift for new moms to bring to your next baby shower, one thing every first-time parent needs is crib sheets — but not just any sheets, the best crib sheets for babies. Crib sheets may seem like a mundane nursery purchase, but they’re actually one of the most important items you’ll buy for your baby. So, why are crib sheets so important?

Why do crib sheets matter?

Crib sheets are exactly what they sound like — they’re sheets that cover your baby’s crib mattress. However, unlike regular adult bed sheets, crib sheets consist of just one sheet that is fitted to your baby’s mattress for safety and security. Given that crib sheets are the only bedding that should be in your baby’s crib, making sure they’re not only cute but comfy is integral to a good night’s sleep. Baby crib sheets are made from all different kinds of fabrics, with the most popular being cotton, polyester, flannel, linen, microfiber, and muslin.

How many crib sheets do you need?

A good general rule of thumb is to have at least two crib sheets at your disposal at all times — one that can be used on your child’s crib mattress and a back up for laundry days or for when accidents occur. We recommend having at minimum three in your baby’s nursery because as all new moms can attest, keeping up with laundry and a newborn isn’t always easy. This way, you can rest easy knowing you have a back up to your back up.

When can you use a blanket in the crib?

According the National Sleep Foundation, blankets should be kept out of your child’s crib as they nap or sleep until they 12 months old. Why is this? The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that having loose objects like blankets, pillows, comforters, quilts, and even stuffed toys in your child’s crib can increase the likelihood of suffocation and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). If you’re worried about keeping your child or grandchild warm as they sleep, the best thing to do is dress them in cozy, breathable sleepwear like footie pajamas, swaddles, and sleep sacks.
