Why Reese Witherspoon’s Face Is ‘Mathematically Beautiful’

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. However, mathematicians have revealed they’ve discovered a way to determine who is the most beautiful, using what mathematicians know best — numbers.

The Daily Star explained that researchers from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, analyzed photographs of 55 female models to determine the most ideal facial proportions.

All of the women deemed to be most aesthetically pleasing had one very precise thing in common — their cheekbones were spaced as wide apart as the width of their eyebrows. Meaning, those with a heart-shaped face were deemed most beautiful. Big Little Lies actress, Reese Witherspoon is famous for her heart-shaped face and youthful features.

Because we’re talking math, of course there are numbers involved. If you’re brave enough, you can do the figures to find out if you, like Reese Witherspoon, are classified as “mathematically beautiful.” The researchers noted that the average distance between the model’s eyes was strictly 59.2 mm. The vertical distance between the eyes and the cheekbones was 13.1 mm.

We bet you’re wondering, what are we supposed to do with this information except maybe feel a little worse about ourselves if we don’t measure up? Well, the research has been welcomed by the cosmetic surgery industry that now has the parameters to give their clients the very best results. Dr. Gary Ross, a leading facial cosmetic surgeon based in Manchester, England, told The Daily Star, “This equation essentially points out that enhanced volume in your face can make you look more aesthetically pleasing, scientifically speaking.”

“While we’ve always known this, it’s the first time anyone has sought to put an exact parameter on a ‘beautiful’ mid face.”
