Jade rollers — or variations of them — have become all the rage in recent years, with everyone from Alicia Keys to Courteney Cox jumping on the facial massage bandwagon. These paint-roller style devices are typically made from solid jade, rose quartz, or amethyst and are said to help with everything from detoxing the lymphatic system and brightening skin due to increased blood flow to creating a more even skin tone. The latest luxe variation of this go-to beauty tool just might trump them all, however: Say hello to Sio Beauty’s Cryodrop ($115, Sio Beauty).

Like most rollers, this tear drop-shaped-tool can be used for facial massage to boost lymphatic drainage, bring more oxygen (and consequently, nutrients) to the skin, and release muscle tension. Unlike your run-of-the-mill apparatus, however, it’s made of a medical-grade steel that features “diamagnetic action.”

Essentially, this little doohickey has microporous materials that repel away from the magnetic field of the tool, thereby pushing the product deeper into your skin for better absorption and longer-lasting results. It works especially well with the brand’s Sio Energy serum ($50, Sio Beauty or $135 for the set), which also features diamagnetic materials and is packed with ultra-hydrating hyaluronic acid and camellia Japonica flower, plumping collagen peptides, and an anti-oxidizing green tea to moisturize and rejuvenate.

I’m not sure if it’s due to the magnets or the steel, but upon trying it for myself for the first time, this thing glided across my skin — particularly when dry — like a piece of silk, putting any other roller I’ve tried to shame. Also setting this tool apart? Its unique silhouette. With a slimmer, pointed tip, it was far easier to get at the more narrow areas of my face, such as the delicate under-eye area or the spot between my lips and my nose.

While the Cryodrop is naturally cold (all the better to reduce puffiness!), you can place it in the refrigerator for five minutes prior to use to feel its cooling effects that much more.

Between its chilling, magnetic, and massaging properties, this device promises to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, smooth and visibly tighten skin, and diminish pores and puffiness. Maybe it was my imagination, but after just a few uses, my skin did appear more plump and bright, living up to the “instant refresh” it claimed to deliver.

To use it, apply Sio’s Energy serum (or any you so choose) to your skin and massage it in evenly with the tool, making even, gentle strokes for roughly one minute.

You can also use the Cryodrop on dry skin for a soothing massage, applying light pressure and pushing up toward the ears and temples as you move it across your complexion.
