Hair loss is of the more maddening side effects of getting older. Sometimes it feels like there’s nothing you can do to stop that inevitable shedding and better protect your scalp and strands. But could the way you wash your hair actually exacerbate it? One small change when you’re showering could make a difference over time, and it’s as easy as tweaking your shampoo technique.
Popular hair stylist Matt Newman recently posted an easy tip on TikTok that you can try out for yourself the next time you’re washing your hair in the shower. After applying the recommended amount of your preferred product, “don’t scrub back and forth” to apply it, Newman notes. Though the massaging motion may feel nice for your head, you run the risk of breaking off hair strands in the process, causing more shedding than you’d have normally.
The Best Way to Shampoo Your Hair
What should you do instead? Newman recommends applying your shampoo in light, circular motions and lifting your fingertips off of your head when you move to a different part of the scalp. This ensures that you’re not putting more pressure on your individual hair strands or inadvertently ripping out follicles as you wash. Lastly, don’t scrub so hard to work your product into a lather! Some shampoos aren’t especially sudsy or soapy, and you don’t want to trigger more hair loss if a product just isn’t created a certain way.
When it comes to other tips that can keep those tresses healthy and thriving, you can try applying rosemary oil to slow the graying process, using a dandruff shampoo (even if you don’t have dandruff!) to add volume to your hair, and sipping some peppermint tea to reverse signs of thinning.
It’s reassuring to know that a few natural remedies and small changes to your haircare routine can make a big difference over time — without breaking the bank!
