To reap the benefits at home, try these spa-inspired DIY treatments. They’re cheap and simple, and they just might help improve your scalp health, leading to more beautiful tresses. Whether your scalp is oily, dry, or irritated, there’s an easy scalp treatment for you to try.

For an Oily Scalp: Try an Astringent Mask

Whip up a mask made from bentonite clay and tea tree oil. The clay absorbs excess oil on the scalp’s surface, and astringent tea tree oil constricts pores to cut down on oil production. Clearing away oil also helps to encourage hair growth.

To do: Mix 1 tablespoon of bentonite clay powder, 1 tablespoon of water, and 3 drops of tea tree oil. Apply onto a damp scalp; rinse after 10 minutes.

For a Dry Scalp: Try a Pore-Opening Steam

Notice a lot of white flakes? Your scalp skin may be parched. Covering it with a heated towel will prompt oil glands into production to add much-needed moisture. A hydrated scalp can lead to shiny, lustrous locks.

To do: Soak a washcloth with warm water, wring out excess and place onto a damp or dry scalp. Cover with a shower cap (this will create a steamy environment), let sit 5 minutes, then remove.

For a Sore Scalp: Try an Exfoliating Rub

Massaging the head increases circulation to the scalp and may help ease pain or irritation. Plus, it can help exfoliate the scalp’s clogged pores to reduce any inflammation. Unclogging pores on the scalp can strengthen strands at the root.

To do: Use fingertips to gently massage the scalp in circular motions for 2 to 3 minutes.
