Rosacea is one of the most common skin conditions in the world. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, there are more than 14 million people are living with rosacea in just the US alone. Although the symptoms are usually benign, it can be frustrating (and embarrassing) to deal with bright red flare-ups all over your face. Fortunately, you can minimize the amount of rosy patches by avoiding certain food and drinks.
According to dermatologist Marisa Garshick, MD, FAAD, frequent triggers for rosacea include spicy food, alcoholic beverages, and foods that contain cinnamaldehyde. If you’re confused by the last item on that list, it’s the organic compound that gives cinnamon its flavor and can also be found in other things like tomatoes, chocolate, and citrus. “In general, any food or drink that causes the blood vessels to dilate can worsen rosacea,” Dr. Garshick tells FIRST.
She adds that anything served at a hot temperature can also cause a flare-up. Obviously, we all love a warm meal, but if you’re worried about it causing you to blush more than you want in certain situations (like on a date), make sure to wait for it to cool down a bit before digging in — and skip the cocktails and spicy options on the menu.
Dermatologist Deanne Robinson, MD, FAAD, echos Garshick’s advice and adds that inflammatory culprits like gluten and dairy are another pesky rosacea source.
We know this might sound like sad news for fans of super spicy meals, a good drink, and other tasty treats we love to snack and sip on. However, unless your own dermatologist specifically tells you to steer clear of those items because of potential severe reactions, it’s still mostly safe to enjoy them whenever you aren’t worried about how your face might look.
Plus, increasing your blood-flow with dilated vessels might help you burn fat faster, which could certainly be worth a few cases of extra-rosy cheeks now and then!
