New Edible Face Mask Claims to Soothe Your Whole Body, Inside and Out

Using food products for skin treatment is nothing new. Most of us have tried serums and scrubs that include ingredients like coffee or other things we’re used to seeing in our kitchens. But apart from slathering our skin in actual food items like avocado oil and then using more from the same bottle to fry up dinner, we’re usually not encouraged to literally consume our skincare products. However, a recent trend with beauty companies embracing superfoods and adaptogens as main ingredients that can double as edible supplements and face masks might be about to change all of that.

One such company includes Four Sigmatic, which previously focused on purifying the body from the inside out with products like a Golden Latte Mushroom Mix ($16.19, Amazon). The company took that a step further in January 2019 by launching the Mushroom Face Mask and Tonic ($50, Four Sigmatic), which is designed to be used both topically and internally. Four Sigmatic founder Tero Isokauppila told Allure, “I started playing around with adaptogens and superfoods, and finally created a set of skin-care products you can — and should — eat. If you can’t eat it, I’m not going to put it on my skin or in our skin-care products.” Multiple types of mushrooms are included in the mask, including reishi and chaga varieties that are known for their calming effects on skin.

As intriguing as the idea is, Four Sigmatic isn’t the only company to create something like this for their customers. For example, Moon Juice packs most of their products with plenty of plant-based and adaptogenic ingredients. More specifically, the company’s Pearl Extract ($52, Amazon) description recommends sprinkling it in your coffee, adding it to your smoothies, or brushing it directly onto your skin with your moisturizer.

Of course, whether you’re trying these powdered supplements or other products that promise better skin, you should always check with your doctor before adding something new to your diet and beauty routine. That said, with the rise in popularity of adaptogens in beauty products, we can only imagine there will be even more items like these on the market soon.
