- Correct with Vitamin C
UV rays put production of melanin (skin’s pigment) into overdrive, resulting in brown spots. But vitamin C can help! “This antioxidant inhibits the enzymes responsible for excess pigment production while also increasing cell turnover to fade and brighten existing spots,” says New York City dermatologist Francesca Fusco, M.D. “And one that contains SPF 30 will prevent future damage.”
- Moisturize with green tea
Even without a sunburn, for those of us with sensitive skin, the slightest exposure to heat or sun can trigger skin rashes or rosacea flare-ups. To the rescue: green tea. The “brew” is packed with anti-inflammatory polyphenols that calm irritation and redness, says Dr. Fusco. Plus, continued topical use of green tea has been shown to lessen rosacea-caused ruddiness by 70 percent in four weeks, revealing a more even-toned skin.
- Moisturize with hyaluronic acid
As we get older our bodies produce less hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that holds water into cells to keep skin hydrated. Pair that dryness with a slowdown in skin-firming collagen, and wrinkles can come into harsh focus. Dr. Fusco advises applying the acid topically. “It helps skin cells retain up to a thousand times their weight in water — and the added hydration helps plump lines for smoother-looking skin.”
