If you haven’t heard much about pu-erh tea, you probably will soon. The slimming tea from China is rapidly growing in popularity all around the world in recent years. When you learn all the benefits that pu-erh tea has to offer, you’ll definitely want to take a sip.

What is pu-erh tea?

Pu-erh tea is an earthy-flavored type of post-fermented tea that originates from the Yunnan province of China. According to the scientific journal Molecules, the traditional method of creating pu-erh tea involves first parching crude green tea leaves and then doing a second fermentation with microorganisms. It’s been produced in China for about 1,700 years, and it has been long used as a weight-loss aid and natural fat-melter.

According to the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, pu-erh tea has been shown to have anti-obesity activity in animal studies, slowing gains in body weight and total cholesterol. In terms of human-focused research, Eat This, Not That! reported that pu-erh tea was part of a specialized “flat belly tea diet” for people — a plan that led some test panelists to lose up to 10 pounds in just one week.

Aside from promising weight-loss benefits, pu-erh tea has also been shown to be a good source of antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties, according to Healthline. Research has also suggested that pu-erh tea can even help protect the nervous system, according to Molecular Neurobiology.

Where to Find Pu-Erh Tea

Considering all the pu-erh tea health benefits, it’s no wonder why health enthusiasts in the United States are getting excited about this slimming sip. But if you’ve never had pu-erh tea before, you might be curious about how to go about finding it in the first place. After all, pu-erh tea is not nearly as commonplace in American grocery stores as, say, oolong or green teas.

Luckily, there are a few pu-erh teas from the Yunnan province available for purchase online, including Ripe Puerh Tea in a Bamboo Leaf Tube ($14.24, Amazon) and Yunnan Longrun Pu-erh Tea Cake-Caiwei ($19.99, Amazon). But it certainly doesn’t hurt to check out your local tea shop to see if they carry a selection as well. You never know: You might find a steal!
