Watch Out for a $75 Coupon for Meijer Grocery Stores

If you’ve noticed a $75 coupon for Meijer grocery stores making the rounds on your Facebook feed, ignore it. It’s a scam. The fraudulent coupon promises customers $75 off any order that is $100 or more between now and December 31. If the coupon link is clicked, your computer will become infected with malware.

Meijer’s public relations manager, Joe Hirschmugl, confirmed that the offer is fake in an interview with WZZM 13, noting that the QR code on the coupon doesn’t correspond to any deal the grocery store has.

The company also posted a Facebook status of the fake coupon with the caption, “Sorry folks, this offer is fake. A fradulent coupon for $75 off your purchase at Meijer is circulating on the web. Be safe and always clip your coupons from mPerks.”

mPerks Rewards

To avoid becoming a Meijer coupon scam victim, you should enroll in the company’s rewards program, known as mPerks. According to Meijer’s website, shoppers can earn back two percent or more in rewards on qualifying purchases. mPerks also offers customers a chance to save on prescriptions: For every five prescriptions filled, Meijer shoppers will get $10 off their next refill. And for those who want to max out their rewards points, Meijer offers shoppers the option to apply for a Meijer MasterCard or Meijer Credit Card.

Remember: Sure, coupons are great, but clicking on every one you see may not pay off in the end. Before you decide to get click-happy, do a little research. Ask yourself: Where did this link come from? Does it come from a reliable source? Does it seem too good to be true? We know it can be hard to resist a good deal, but scammers prey on curious customers who want to save big money — and unfortunately, scams are rampant this time of year. So unless you’re positive the coupon or discount in question is trustworthy, don’t click on it.
