When I was a little girl, my mom taught me how to spell the word “beautiful” in the most memorable way, literally. She said it began with “be-a-u,” pronounced like “be a YOU!” After I heard it described like that, remembering how to spell it was easy. But it doesn’t seem the rest of the country had the pleasure of such an adorable mnemonic device.
Google Trends recently put together a map of the U.S. that featured each state’s most common spelling search in 2019, and let’s just say the phrase “how to spell beautiful” made many, many appearances! From California to Texas to North Carolina, America the b-e-a-u-tiful, indeed!
Check out the map below for the rest of the country’s problem words. The results? Eye-opening, especially considering how often many of the same words popped up. Some common other misspellings (or prevented misspellings) include “favorite,””grey,” “patient,” and “patience” (aww New Mexico).
As for me, I’m originally from Indiana, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never Googled how to spell “activities” before. That said, I know that I’ve definitely searched for the spelling of “veterinarian” (hi, Delaware!) and phenomenal (what’s up, Oregon!). I may have also searched for the spelling of “pneumonia” at some point, but I do have to say I’m a bit concerned that so many people in Pennsylvania needed to know how to spell that word this year!
One more quirky thing I noticed from this map? In the midst of all the searches in the continental U.S., people in Hawaii are just trying to spell that state’s name. Yes, the most common searched how to spell word in Hawaii is, Hawaii! Let’s just chalk this up to all the tourists wanting to let everyone know where they are — with proper spelling. Can’t say we blame them!
