Researchers from the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center in Baton Rouge looked at nutritional data spanning nine years and found that men and women who ate fresh pears weighed about 8 pounds less than their non-pear-eating counterparts, and were 35 percent less likely to be obese—even if the levels of exercise were the same between the two groups.
This isn’t the first study to discover a link between pear consumption and lower body weight. About 10 years ago, Brazilian researchers found that women who ate three small pears a day for 12 weeks lost three pounds compared to those who didn’t. Even better, their blood sugar levels were way down.
One explanation for the fruit’s weight-loss benefit: It’s high in fiber, and eating just one a day provides about 24 percent of your daily fiber. Solid foods that are high in fiber can help you feel full longer, so it’s possible that any weight loss could be due to the fact that overall you’re eating less calories.
