Drew Barrymore’s Easy Diet Plan Lets Her Enjoy Pasta and Wine

Drew Barrymore has always been a pretty open book — that’s what we love about her! The actress isn’t one to hold back how she feels, so her candid (and refreshing) response when asked how she feels about the pressure in Hollywood to lose weight isn’t too surprising.

“I think it’s bulls***,” she told People. She explained that she doesn’t buy into the stick thin ideal and is a champion of “embracing your own genetics,” rather than focusing on being super-skinny. “I just knew that genetically it would take starving myself and 24 hours of working out to have that type of body, and that just was not my priority.”

Barrymore has tried her fair share of restrictive diets in the past, though. “I’m talking no dairy, no grains, no carbs, but then you eat one crouton and you turn into a puffer fish because your body goes into shock,” she explained to PureWow. “Not to mention the miserable deprivation of the pleasure of life: food!”

Now, she embraces being active and healthy, especially as a single mom with two young girls, Olive and Frankie. “I want to be able to chase my kids around and be a full-time mom,” she said. But, instead of drastically restricting what she eats, she relies on a simple 80/20 rule where she eats healthy 80 percent of the time and then lets herself splurge 20 percent of the time. “With this,” Barrymore explained, “I can have some pasta and some wine — because, dammit, I love my wine!” Who doesn’t relate to that? And it’s clearly working for the beautiful actress.

On top of this, Barrymore recently became a spokesperson for EMSCULPT. The non-invasive procedure claims to strengthen muscles and eliminate fat cells by inducing powerful muscle contractions with high-intensity electromagnets. 

This appealed to Barrymore, who suffered from diastasis recti, or the separation of her abdominal muscles, after her pregnancies. She found it difficult and painful to do exercise like yoga, pilates, or even just dancing around with her girls. “A little over a month post-treatment, I can visibly see the results, and can tell a difference in my workouts,” she said in a press release

Still, Barrymore emphasizes that she’s not doing any of this to reach an impossible size or goal. “When I’m working out and enjoying my life, I can let go of the mental gymnastics and tell myself, ‘I’ve got this,’” she said. Plus, we can’t think of a better motivation than a night of pasta, wine, and having fun with your kids!
