How to Get Healthy Without Breaking the Bank

Tags:

Last year, nearly 95 percent of Americans made resolutions to either save money or get healthier — and some resolved to do both. With the rising costs of gyms, workout equipment and more, it may seem like these two resolutions don’t go hand in hand. Fortunately, experts say you don’t have to shell out big money to get fit.

“Competition in the fitness field is great news for the consumer, and right now is the best time to save since so many gyms, trainers and companies want new business and offer big dis- counts,” says fitness pro Kecia Clarke, author of Fitness Is a Way of Life. “According to a study in the Journal of the American Heart Association, regularly working out saved participants up to $2,500 a year in medical costs.”

But you don’t want to pay for gym services or workout gear you won’t use. The good news: Answering a few questions about your preferences can help you find the best way to get fit — for less.

Even More Ways to Save on Fitness

Workout Clothes: Surprise! Skip the sport- ing goods stores and check out T.J. Maxx, Marshalls, Filene’s Basement, Ross and more. These discount stores typically carry brand-name exercise clothes and accessories for half the price!

Running Shoes: Get sneakers for 75 percent less at RoadRunnerSports.com and KellysRunningWarehouse.com. Also smart: Buy “old” versions. Manufacturers regularly upgrade sneakers, so you can save on last year’s model at many shoe stores.

Home Equipment: Sporting goods stores sell returned or open box equipment at a discount of at least 25 percent. You’ll also find deals on Facebook Marketplace, where people sell like-new exercise bikes, weights, and treadmills they never even used!
