Looking for a surprisingly easy way to add years–and happiness–to your life? Then lace up your sneakers, and hit the pavement (or the nearest park).
Walking briskly for just 25 minutes a day, it turns out, offers a number of health benefits. One of the biggest: It can cut the risk of heart attack by 50 percent, a new study from Germany found. And that’s not all. Walking delays the aging process by repairing the DNA in our bodies, which may add anywhere from three to seven years to your life.
Other studies have shown how any form of moderate exercise can boost memory, improve your mood, and even stave off dementia. So not only will you age more slowly, but you’ll be happier once you hit 70.
It doesn’t even matter when you start. The researchers studied people between the ages of 30 and 60 who were not regular exercisers, and discovered the anti-aging perks after they’d walked or jogged for six months.
As Sanjay Sharma, a professor of cardiology in London told the British newspaper The Telegraph: “We may never avoid becoming completely old, but we may delay the time we become old.”
And, he added, not only will we live longer if we exercise, we’ll look younger, too.
