5 Things Every Room Needs to Feel Finished

Tags:

With so many different styles to consider, decorating your home can quickly become overwhelming. If you’ve been fussing around with styling a room, but it’s just not coming together it may be missing one of the essential interior design elements every room needs to feel complete.

Everyone’s taste is different and no two rooms are exactly alike, but in order for your home to look and feel smartly finished make sure you incorporate the following.

Books

“A room without books is like a body without a soul,” said the Roman philosopher Marcus Tullius Cicero. Books are the ultimate decorating accessory as they never go out of style, don’t cost a fortune, and can easily be moved around. They will give your room soul, as well as something to peruse when you get a spare ten minutes of downtime.

Ambient Lighting

When it come to lighting choices for the home, so many people make the mistake of opting for a standard grid of overhead lights that illuminate a room starkly, offering no subtlety or depth.

Embrace ambient lighting options such as lamps, wall sconces, and string lights. Dot these around the room to create warm pools of light which are infinitely more atmospheric and are essential for cozying up your home.

Art

Blank walls are boring and are the main culprit for making a space feel bare. Add instant personality with art. It need not be expensive — you can make a statement artwork or play around with different displays such as framing old photographs and postcards or pining up your kids’ creations.

Texture

Texture attracts the eye and is essential for adding interest to a room. A whole room of flat surfaces is very dull. Introduce some diversity in the way of a chunky-knit throw, rustic timber furniture, or even a leafy indoor plant. These earthy objects will work wonders to add a sense of soul to your home.

Complimentary Colors

Possibly the most important factor in making a room feel finished is complementary colors. If you decorate your home without paying heed to color it will end up feeling very disjointed and probably quite ugly. The easiest way to avoid this is to opt for a neutral backdrop consisting of white walls and plain flooring and choose just one or two colors for accessorizing. Try to stay disciplined. A jute floor rug on sale is not going to go with your velvet sofa!
