This Is What You Call a Single Strand of Spaghetti

Tags:

Before we begin this article, let us remember that spaghetti is amazing, and regardless of what you’re about to find out, it doesn’t change that fact. Now, we can start.

You may want to stop everything you’re doing, because spaghetti is plural and a single spaghetti is actually called a “spaghetto.”

Are you now wondering how you’ve been on the earth for this many years not knowing this? The internet is. The internet is freaking out big time after Twitter user @caroramsey tweeted about the Italian food discovery, which was retweeted over 18,200 times and liked about 430,000 times.

People have also taken to sharing diagrams on the topic, just in case anyone was still confused.

If you’ve ever been to Italy, you may have discovered that yes, “spaghetti” is the plural for one single “spaghetto,” and that it’s not the only Italian word you’ve been using wrong. Whenever you head over to Starbucks and order one of those pre-packaged sandwiches they so wrongly label “panini,” you’re ordering that wrong, too — because that would mean you’re ordering more than one “panino.”

So while we’re at it, let’s discuss the other food terms you’ve been using incorrectly all this time:

Ravioli means more than one raviolo.

Salami is plural for the singuar “salame” (not salamo because it’s a feminine noun, and you can’t add an “a” to the end of it).

And what about those little tasty cannoli treats? Yeah, the singular for them is canolo. So if you’ve been meaning to order one but end up with a few because you say “cannoli,” that’s why.

Let’s throw a curve ball in there with “penne.” Penne pasta is plural for penna, the singular word for your favorite pasta.

Biscotti is actually biscotto if you want the one biscuit.

The same principle applies to gnocchi, whose singular is gnocco.

And finally, did you know that more than one pizza would actually be pizze? So, next time you’re ordering multiple pizzas, feel free to use this knowledge and say “pizze” to impress your Italian waiter. Ciao.

Wow, good to know!
