7 Ways to Style a Living Room Successfully

Tags:

Whether you prioritize conversation, entertaining, watching TV or all of the above, you want your living room to be an inviting, functional, and stylish space where you enjoy spending time. From the way you lay out your living room to your color scheme and furniture choice, every element contributes to the overall look, feel, and functionality of the space. Here are seven styling tips to remember when decorating your living room to make it feel cohesive and, most importantly, comfortable.

Add personality with color.

A much-loved artwork or soft furnishings will brighten up any space, especially if your home has a neutral color palette.

Designate zones.

When it comes to the layout of your living room, pushing all the furniture against the walls might seem like a good idea, but actually, it can make your room feel smaller. Instead, break the room into “zones.” For example, the entertaining zone could be anchored with a rug and bordered by a lounge and armchair.

Choose a suitable rug.

When choosing a rug, go for one that’s so big that the front feet of all your living room furniture are placed on it. This provides balance and creates zones for your room and will also make it feel larger, too.

Introduce texture to a neutral palette.

If you’re thinking of sticking to one main color (for example white or gray), mix things up with texture and pattern. Think leather, sisal, linen, and other natural materials, as well as textural artwork, rugs, and lighting.

Streamline your space.

Many people fill their living rooms with furniture that is too large or chunky for the space, especially when it comes to sofas. This will make the room look and feel smaller. Consider sofas and chairs with slim line arms, particularly for smaller spaces.

Get the lighting right.

Lighting is so important in a living room, so make sure it’s something you consider carefully when planning your space. Think about what you’ll use the room for: is it just for watching TV, or will you read there, too, and play board games, or entertain? If so, think about the areas where this is likely to happen, and plan the lighting accordingly.

Bring in some greenery.

One of our golden rules of decorating: always add greenery. In a living room, it can be easy to forget to add an indoor plant or two, but they add so much life to a space. Consider hanging pots or a window herb garden if you’re short on surface space.
