If We See Less of Kate Middleton in the Next Six Months, It’s Because She’s on Maternity Leave

Tags:

It’d be quite the understatement to say we were shocked when Kate Middleton left the hospital just hours after delivering her son, Prince Louis, on April 23, 2018. When she attended Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding three weeks later, we were even more gobsmacked. How did this woman have such a busy schedule barely a month out from giving birth? If anyone deserves a break, it’s Kate — and she’s about to get a long one!

According to tradition, “new royal moms [usually] take a six-month break from official engagements,” royal biographer Duncan Larcombe told Harper’s Bazaar Australia. Must be nice, right? As much as we’d enjoy a half-year-long staycation, we’ll have to settle for a few hours of silence when the husband takes the kids for ice cream on the weekend.

It makes sense that Kate would attend the royal wedding despite having recently given birth. She has a close bond with her brother-in-law, and her children were members of the bridal party. According to Larcombe, Prince Harry’s nuptials were considered a “family affair” rather than an official engagement.

Going forward, Kate “will pick and choose her engagements,” Larcombe said. So it’s possible that we won’t see the duchess again until some time in late October. In six months’ time, we’ll be approaching the holidays, so Kate will most likely be present at big events like Christmas with the queen. Kate didn’t make an appearance at Prince Charles’ 70th birthday celebrations (presumably due to her maternity leave), but we expect to see her at the Trooping of the Colour festivities on June 9, as this is when the country officially observes the queen’s birthday.

Though we certainly envy Kate’s upcoming time off, we can’t say we’d give up our current lives to become a British royal. (That’s a lot of new rules to follow after all.) If, however, we got to be duchess-on-vacation for a day, the first thing we’d do is order royal room service and then take a nice, long nap. We hope Kate gets to do the same!
