Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Invite Thousands of People to Their Wedding

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are going to invite 2,640 members of the public to Windsor Castle for their wedding on May 19.

On March 2, the couple revealed their plans to open up the celebration to the public in a new statement from Kensington Palace. “Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have said they want their wedding day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too,” it read. “This wedding, like all weddings, will be a moment of fun and joy that will reflect the characters and values of the bride and groom.”

Harry and Meghan had previously shared their plans for a carriage procession following the ceremony, which will have the newlyweds leave Windsor Castle and follow a circular route through the town of Windsor, then go through Castle Hill, the High Street, Kings Road, and Long Walk. Today, the statement went a step further, and added that the pair “have invited 2,640 people into the grounds of Windsor Castle to watch the arrivals of the bride and groom and their wedding guests at the chapel and to watch the carriage procession as it departs from the castle.” Some people will have the chance to be at the most famous wedding of the year.

How were the lucky 2,640 selected? A portion of 1,200 people have been nominated by nine regional Lord Lieutenant offices, including “young people who have shown strong leadership and those who have served their communities,” according to the palace. Another 200 come from the charities and organizations that Harry and Meghan are closely associated with; 100 are pupils from two local schools, the Royal School and St. George’s School in Windsor; 610 are members of the Windsor Castle community; and the final 530 are members of the Royal Households and Crown Estate.
