Harry and Meghan Have Decided on an Unusual Wedding Cake Flavor

Tags:

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have asked Claire Ptak — owner of London’s Violet Bakery — to make their wedding cake. Kensington Palace announced the news in a series of tweets this morning. “For their wedding cake Prince Harry and Ms. Meghan Markle have chosen pastry chef Claire Ptak, owner of the London-based bakery Violet Cakes,” the Palace revealed, adding that the couple have asked Ptak to create “a lemon elderflower cake that will incorporate the bright flavors of spring,” which “will be covered with buttercream and decorated with fresh flowers.”

Ptak, who was raised in California, started Violet Bakery as a stall on Broadway Market back in 2010, baking at home, before eventually opening her store in Hackney. Her focus on using seasonal and organic ingredients appears to have caught the attention of Meghan, who previously interviewed the chef for her now-defunct lifestyle website, The Tig. As well as publishing her cake recipes in The Violet Bakery Cookbook, she has also written recipes for the high street chain Leon, focusing on baking & desserts.

“I can’t tell you how delighted I am to be chosen to make Prince Harry and Ms. Markle’s wedding cake,” Ptak raved in a statement to coincide with the official announcement. “Knowing that they really share the same values as I do about good provenance, sustainability, seasonality, and most importantly flavor, makes this the most exciting event to be a part of.”

It had previously been rumored the couple would make the unusual choice of a banana cake for their big day, but it seems they’ve chosen to break with tradition in a different way: this will be the first time that a royal couple will not serve fruit cake to their wedding guests (the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge opted for a multi-layered fruit cake by Fiona Cairns after their 2011 ceremony).

“Prince Harry and Ms. Markle are looking forward to sharing the cake with guests at their wedding at Windsor Castle on May 19th,” the palace confirmed.
